Why Budo?
My name is Mark. I was a professional soldier for 5 years and completed missions in 3 African countries during the year I spend on the Continent as part of a Quick Reaction Force. I did a mixture of specialized jobs within the infantry and artillery including covert forward observation, coordinating artillery strikes, covert target acquisition, UAV operation, reconnaissance and many more while being attached to sniper and special forces teams overseas. I managed to be awarded 3 medals for my service and make a difference in some of the worst places in the world.
I've been doing martial arts all my life. I started Kung Fu at a young age and continued to do BJJ and MMA with the military while I continued to seek out other Dojo. I am also a certified stunt and fight choreographer for film and stage.
With all this experience behind me most people would think I had achieved my personal goals, but for me this wasn't the case. I still see limitations with the previous arts I had practiced. Internally and externally I was seeking more, something that would give me the path I wished to walk in life. I had an internal calling to keep searching for a higher source of training, something beyond the physical and mental rules and restrictions we tend to have put upon us. I wanted to find something with no restrictions, something that gives the practitioner the ability to continue to progress, to grow and to follow a path walked by warriors of the ancient world, a path walked very few today.
I finally found it.
The Bujinkan.....Budo.....and the arts of Ninjutsu.
My reasons for training may differ from those of others, but each man must walk his own path. I wish to follow the path of the true warrior. I am seeking to grow my spirit, to grow physically, mentally and spiritually. I wish to become more than just a man, to be the ultimate warrior but have such a high level of awareness that I never need to use my skills. I am seeking enlightenment, not the type of learning where people sit around a talk philosophy all day, but true enlightenment in the warriors way where I can implement what I have learned into my life and make my life better each and every day. I seek the ability to protect those I love from any adversary, one or many and conquer any obstacle with sure victory. I seek a path that will teach me everything I have ever wanted to know and help me find my true self.
Ninjutsu has shown me the path I have always been seeking, however it is my job to walk it......and I intend to.
Why do I train with Rob Bascue Sensei? It is simple actually. After my military service I have gained experience. Some of the things I have learned is always train with somebody who is better than you, never waste your time listening to somebody who doesn't practice what they preach or implement what they teach into their own life, and finally, seek to train with somebody who has experience in what they are teaching you.
Rob Sensei has been doing martial arts over 30 years, over 20 of those have been in the Bujinkan. He has a lot of professional fighting experience and continues train, he seeks to get better rather than sitting back with the "Master" attitude that he has a Dojo and has nothing more to learn. There is always more to learn. He says this and continues to seek greater knowledge. This means there is no limit to what he teaches, he continues to learn and get even better, continues to travel to Japan each year for training and has a direct student link to the Shinan and therefore also to Soke. This helps me continue to learn and get better. He a very respectable individual with good morals and a real interest in his students. I am lucky to have the opportunity to train with him.
Budo can be whatever the practitoner wants it to be. My entire family on my father's side were soldiers, so for me Budo is a way of life.

It has been my privilege to be a member of the Northwest Bujinkan Dojo since October 2008. This Dojo is a place of true warrior spirit, from the lessons of the Grandmaster, Soke Maasaki Hatsumi, to the practical martial skills taught for the real world by Sensei Rob Bascue. This is no “McDojo;” I base this on the experience of having studied several other martial arts styles throughout my military career of 29 years. I have taken the knowledge, training, and martial skills I have gained from Bujinkan to both Iraq and to Afghanistan and I have been well served.

This is my story...
I have struggled with deep depression for as long as I remember, age 5 is my earliest memory of it.
Fast forward to my mid-teen years, still in deep depression and not doing well in school despite an IQ of 146. I then decided to join the United States Marine Corps to become a "better" person. I did well within the structured environment, excelling well above my peers.
During the Invasion of Iraq in 2003 I was a squad leader specializing in Urban Combat, demolitions and anti-tank warfare. I was often called upon for special missions and tasks. In my mind's eye, I had "made it" I was important and well respected.
In early 2004 I left the Marines in search of my fame and fortune back home only to find that the world had moved on without me. All of the accomplishments I had made meant nothing. The deep depressive episodes became worse and more often, also combining with PTSD and TBI. These would lead to uncontrollable outbursts of rage, violence and suicidal ideation.
For many years after I left the Marines the only work I could find that would tolerate me was as a bouncer at some of the most violent bars in town. It fit me perfectly at the time, I never lost a fight...until I did, once. It made me doubt the 20 years of martial arts training I had under my belt, it made me doubt myself. There has to be something better than this.
I met Sensei Rob Bascue in March of 2009, I sat and observed one of his classes. Watching the techniques very carefully and listening as he guided the class. I wasn't too interested until he sat everyone down and said "Budo is life, the way of war IS the way of life. Its important to recognize this" He continued into his lecture and somehow, everything he was saying made perfect sense to me...it felt as if he was speaking directly to me.
As I write this I have been training for almost 2 years now. I now enjoy a depression free life full of happiness and vigor that I have NEVER known before this. It hasn't been an easy path getting here but its been worthwhile. I could honestly never thank Sensei Rob Bascue enough for all of the support and selflessness that he has given me during my time under him. The teachings of Budo Taijutsu from the Bujinkan truly are the way of the Devine Warrior. Budo and Sensei Rob Bascue showed me the real me and saved my life. If you ever want to experience real martial arts, a real martial lifestyle along with true inner peace and happiness. Give Sensei Bascue a call.
Former Marine
I am writing this as the father of an Iraq war veteran.
When my son, Brad, was 16 years old he came to me and announced that he was going into the USMC as soon as he could. His reasoning was that he didn't like who he was and that the Marines would remake him into the man he wanted to be. No amount of discussion on our part had any affect on his mindset. He had a lot of success during his four year hitch but became aware following the Iraq war that the Marine Corps wasn't the answer he wanted.
After leaving the Corps, he returned home disillusioned, but determined to move forward. During the first few months, following his return he started having problems dealing with life on the "outside". Extreme anger, frustration, inability to find work, etc. became the norm. We engaged the VA to help us and after several years of haggling with them, Brad was designated 100% disabled due to PTSD (post traumatic syndrome) and TBI (traumatic brain injury). The VA psyche doctors wanted to put him on a drug regimen but Brad refused to take any drugs so we were at an impasse. About that time which was about 4 1/2 years after leaving the Marine Corps. Brad came to me with some literature from NW Bujinkan dojo, (Sensei Rob Bascue)) and Japan's Grandmaster Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi.
He asked me if I thought he should give it a try. After reading the literature I was convinced that if this martial art form focused on personal growth as proclaimed, it would be a very good thing for Brad. The Philosophy of Budo is the opposite of the attack/kill of the USMC being a defensive art form with the focus on personal growth (mental, physical, spiritual).
Two years and a great deal of personal growth later, Brad is a different person. Budo Taijutsu has given him a way to defuse the attack/kill philosophy imposed by the USMC as well as to alleviate many of the side effects of PTSD and TBI. Everyone who knows Brad has said that he has become a different, better person. Budo has become a way of his life and has replaced the need for a prescription drug regimen to control anger and aggression. He has seen consistent improvement in all phases of his life. He and his family and friends are looking forward to his continued personal growth as he advances in his Budo training. He knows that Budo has become a permanent part of his life.
As a short sidelight I have been so intrigued with Budo that at my age of 64 I decided to train also. I truly believe that anyone can benefit from this extraordinary martial arts training.
